Description
Doxycycline
Indications/Uses
Rickettsial, chlamydial, mycoplasmal infections, brucellosis & plague, tularaemia, chronic bronchitis, chancroid, granuloma inguinale, UTI, acne; malabsorption syndrome; cholera, relapsing fever, leptospirosis & early stage of Lyme disease; balantidiasis, amoebic dysentry; syphilis, yaws, gonorrhoea, actinomycosis, anthrax, rat-bite fever & acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take w/ a full glass of water & remain upright for at least 30 min. Take w/ food or milk if GI irritation occurs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to doxycycline or other tetracyclines. Porphyria. Children <8 yr. Last half of pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Liver impairment. May interfere with some diagnostic tests including determination of urine catecholamines or glucose.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting & diarrhoea; teeth discoloration in children; stomach cramps or burning; mouth or sore throat (fungal overgrowth, hypertrophy of papilla); increased photosensitivity; rectal or genital area itching; hepatotoxicity; leukocytosis, neutropenia, leukopenia, atypical lymphocytes, toxic granulation of granulocytes, haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia & thrombocytopenic purpura.
