WORLD HEMOPHILIA DAY
Every year on April 17th, the world comes together to observe world hemophilia Day, a day dedicated to raise awareness about a condition that many people have heard of but few truly understand.
Hemophilia is not just bleeding too much, it is a genetic condition where the blood lacks certain clotting factors needed to stop bleeding. This means that even a minor injury can lead to prolonged bleeding, and in severe cases internal bleeding can occur without any visible wound.
This year theme is Diagnosis; First step to care
World federation of hemophilia estimated that over 3 quarter of the population of people with hemophilia worldwide are undiagnosed, and an even more significant gap also exisit for others bleeding disorders.
This means that hundreds of thousands of people with bleeding disorders around the world still lack access to basic care.
Every 17th April is an opportunity to raise awareness and provide education on bleeding disorders.
Who is affected?
Hemophilia mainly affects males, while females are usually carriers
Common signs to watch for
1. Frequent nose bleeds
2. Easy bruising
3. Prolonged bleeding after cuts or injections
4. joint pain or sweeping due to internal bleeding
Can it be treated?
While there is no permanent cure hemophilia can be effectively managed with proper treatment, including
1. clotting factor replacement therapy.
